Bringing the Zoo to Life Through Storytelling
What if a trip to the zoo could be more than just seeing animals - What if it could also be a journey through rich cultural narratives?

That’s the inspiration behind BushQuest, an interactive app that transforms a simple zoo visit into a captivating adventure with Dreamtime stories.

Making Learning Fun and Engaging
When kids visit the zoo, they’re full of curiosity, but how do we keep them engaged while teaching them about indigenous culture? Our challenge was to find a way to enhance their learning experience without overwhelming them with screens and tech.

My Approach
Blending Technology with Real-World Exploration
To create this experience, I needed to blend the digital world with the physical one seamlessly. I began with research—understanding how kids learn best and what keeps them engaged. The answer was clear: interactive storytelling. So, I designed BushQuest, an app that uses QR codes at animal exhibits to unlock Dreamtime stories, making the visit both educational and exciting.

The Process
Crafting an Interactive Journey
I started by sketching the user journey on a storyboard to visualize the experience. After mapping it out on the storyboard, I moved on to initial wireframes and then created interactive prototypes in Figma. To keep the scope manageable, I focused solely on the "user journey within the Koala exhibit."

By using the storyboard, I was able to envision how visitors would interact with each component, assess the flow of movement within the space, and identify potential bottlenecks or points of confusion.

Once I finalized the user journey and touchpoints for the app, I began working on wireframes and high-fidelity mockups. Based on different age groups, I created varied app experiences and stories tailored to each group’s cognitive abilities, ensuring a more effective and engaging solution.
Testing was key—I brought in families to see how kids interacted with the app, refining the design based on their feedback. It was all about making sure the app was intuitive, engaging, and respectful of cultural storytelling.

The Solution
A Balanced Blend of Education and Fun
With the QR code technology, we managed to keep the tech use minimal but impactful. Kids could scan codes at different exhibits and listen to Dreamtime stories tailored to their age group. This approach let them explore at their own pace, blending education with adventure without overwhelming them. Parents also loved this balance between learning and limited screen use, making it an enriching experience for everyone.

Reflecting on the Impact
My faculty provided valuable feedback, stating:
“This is an excellent project that creatively enhances visitor engagement at the zoo with indigenous cultural representation. You conducted purposeful background research to articulate a clear set of design objectives, which guided your design process in developing a scavenger hunt experience tailored to the koala enclosure. You effectively demonstrated your design prototyping through a storyboard and UX prototype. You did a great job with both, and the comparative solutions for different age groups were thoroughly explored and well explained. It was great to see these insights translate into your UX prototype. A commendable outcome overall.”

The Power of Thoughtful Design
This project taught me that the best digital experiences are those that respect and enhance the real world. By focusing on user needs and balancing technology with tactile experiences, we created an app that was not just a tool, but a companion to the zoo visit—one that made learning memorable and fun.
